Charles Ness CB

Charles Ness is an aeronautical engineer who has worked with all of the United Kingdom’s major combat aircraft fleets of the last 35 years. He also held a number of senior appointments in the Royal Air Force spanning strategic planning, acquisition and air safety. The latter half of his Service career saw him developing and leading major change initiatives associated with organisation redesign and business transformation. As an enthusiastic advocate of Lean philosophy, he was an early contributor to developing the culture shift thinking and practice that has enabled the delivery of real savings in programmes involving multi-sector agencies.

Charles is motivated to make a real difference rather than merely cogitate about things and has a proven track record in developing pragmatic solutions to complex problems. He has served as the chairman of the Boards of numerous, diverse organisations, and places great store in developing effective team dynamics.

He became a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1998 and for many years served continuously as a volunteer, supporting the Organisation’s activity. In 2009 he became a Member of Council, was made a Trustee of the Society, and assumed Chairmanship of the Professional Standards Board, overseeing the admissions process and the professional registration of the Society’s engineers.

Charles was honoured in the 2010 New Years Honours List and is a Companion of the Bath. We were delighted that he accepted our invitation to join us in 2012, since when he has added his own particular Intelligent Energy to our portfolio of capability. Charles and Lis, also a former RAF Officer, live in the rural Southwest and share their ancient farm with Labradors, chickens, ducks and a host of wildlife. They are relishing Bath Rugby’s return to form and await the arrival of silverware.
